Nut and Seed Selections From Barry Farm Foods A large oily kernel that is found in a shell and used in food is typically called a nut, many are actually edible seeds. Since nuts are high in oil content, they are pressed for oil which is used in cosmetics as well as cooking. Nuts are used in cooking, eaten raw, roasted and in some cases even sprouted. Some recent studies have shown consumption of varieties of nuts like almonds and walnuts have a beneficial effect on heart disease and cholesterol problems according to recent clinical trials. Nuts also typically have a very low Glycemic Index. Many of the nuts we carry are raw and ready to eat, but already shelled. Nobody likes shelling black walnuts! Please keep in mind that raw nuts are not crispy and crunchy like the ones out of a can, they only get that way when they are roasted. Roasting them yourself is easy and the aroma in the kitchen is delightful. Not sure how to roast some of these items? Click on the "Recipe How tos" button above.
